FFC- Pandemic Edition: Review of Village Bar

Review of Village Bar, Kieler, WI

For this week's Fish Fry review, we ordered carry-out from one of my all-time favorite fish fry locations, and supper clubs, Village Bar in Kieler, WI.

I have always loved going to the Village Bar for their drinks, fish, atmosphere, and grasshoppers!  Since we have not been dining in just yet, we ordered carry-out :)

We ordered carry-out to be picked up at 5:30pm.  Our order was ready on time, and even though it was about a 20 minute drive back to our house, our food was still warm.

For Lent, the Village Bar had a few different options. See specials below.  My husband and I decided to go with the cod special, while my mom (who dined with us), chose the Trio Platter.   All items are deep fried and come with choice of potato, coleslaw & tartar sauce.  I chose a baked potato, while my husband chose fries.

At first glance the three small pieces of fish I received had a very thick fried batter surrounding the fish.  I cannot handle fried fish that is heavily coated with fried batter, so I ended up pulling off a lot of the fried coating around the fish.  At first taste, the fish was good, but it had no flavor.  Even the deep fried coating didn't seem to have any flavor and it was super greasy.  Once you remove the fried coating, there really wasn't that much fish to enjoy, especially when you only received three small pieces to begin with (see photo).  The tartar sauce was OK, not my favorite, but OK. It looked to be house-made but had a little bit of a tangy, almost lemon taste to it that I really didn't care for, but it paired fine with the fried fish.  The baked potato was really good, and they did provide sour cream which was nice, but no butter.  My mother gave me her fried shrimp which were actually quite large (and fried), and were very good.

Overall, this fish dinner was 'OK' by my standards.  The fish was wayyyy to fried for my taste, and the tartar sauce was between 'OK' and 'I'll pass' by my tartar sauce standards.  With this fish fry being $16, I would only recommend dine in so you get your money's worth for the all you can eat, otherwise, not sure I would recommend it for carry-out, especially if you care for heavily fried fish.

I would, however, recommend heading to the Village Bar if you like your Super Clubs as this is one of my top places to go, and I do plan to head back here hopefully in the near future.
